Privacy Policy
Effective date: July 21, 2026 — Last updated: July 21, 2026
1. Introduction
SplitBill ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application and associated services.
By using SplitBill, you agree to the collection and use of information described in this policy.
2. Information We Collect
Information you provide directly
- Account details: name, email address, phone number, date of birth, and password when you register.
- Profile image: an optional photo you choose to upload.
- Financial data: expense descriptions, amounts, categories, dates, and split configurations you enter.
- Settlement data: payment records, optional proof-of-payment images, and notes.
- Savings goals: goal names, target amounts, and contribution records.
- Communications: messages or support requests you send to us.
Information collected automatically
- Device token: a push notification token to deliver real-time alerts. We do not store persistent device identifiers.
- Usage analytics: anonymised event data (e.g., which features are used) to improve the app. No personally identifiable information is attached to these events.
- IP address and request logs: collected by our server for security, fraud prevention, and debugging. Logs are retained for up to 30 days.
3. How We Use Your Information
- To create and manage your account.
- To provide, operate, and improve the SplitBill service.
- To send push notifications for expense updates, settlements, and group invites (you can disable these in the app).
- To process and record expense splits, settlements, and payments between users.
- To respond to support requests and account deletion inquiries.
- To detect and prevent fraud, abuse, or security incidents.
- To comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
4. Sharing of Information
We share your information only in these circumstances:
- With other users you invite: your name, profile photo, and relevant expense data are visible to members of groups you join or create.
- Service providers: we use third-party providers (cloud hosting, push notification services, analytics) who process data strictly on our behalf under data processing agreements.
- Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM): used to deliver push notifications. Device tokens are transmitted to Google's FCM service.
- Legal requirements: we may disclose data if required by law or to protect the rights, property, or safety of SplitBill or others.
5. Data Retention
We retain your account and financial data for as long as your account is active. Expense records shared with other users may remain visible to those users after you leave a group.
Server access logs are deleted after 30 days. Analytics events are anonymised and may be retained indefinitely in aggregate form.
When you delete your account, your personal data (name, email, phone, date of birth, profile image) and all expenses where you are the sole participant are permanently deleted. Expense records shared with other users are anonymised — your name is removed but the amounts remain to preserve accurate balances for other users.
6. Your Rights and Choices
- Access and correction: update your name, email, phone number, and profile image at any time in the app under Profile → Edit Profile.
- Notification preferences: manage push notification categories in Profile → Edit Profile → Preferences.
- Account deletion: you can permanently delete your account and all associated data by going to Profile → Delete Account inside the app, or by submitting a request on our data deletion page. Requests are processed within 30 days.
- Data portability: contact us at the address below to request an export of your personal data.
7. Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including HTTPS encryption in transit, hashed passwords (bcrypt), and access controls on our servers. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Children's Privacy
SplitBill is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
9. Third-Party Links
Our app may contain links to third-party services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those services and encourage you to review their privacy policies.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by updating the effective date above or by sending an in-app notification. Continued use of SplitBill after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
